The trick is to use a good hexavalent chromium self etching primer. That stuff is bullet proof and creates the perfect base for what ever top coat you desire. It's used extensively in aviation. When ever you see that greenish finish on airplane parts that's what it is. It etches into the metal and creates a corrosion barrier like no other and an excellent base. When I restored my Jeep I sand blasted every square inch of metal and immediately following the Hex was applied. I vowed my Jeep would never rust again.
